Jedi Lightsabers

The venerable lightsaber is the preferred weapon of the Jedi. The lightsaber is a very elegant weapon that is a bit of a throwback to a more chivalrous time when disputes were settled at close quarters rather than from long range with a blaster. The blaster is a messy and crude weapon that can effectively be used by nearly anyone while the lightsaber is a weapon that requires courage, skill and dexterity combined with a healthy dose of the Force in order to be effective.
In it's passive and deactivated state, a lightsaber could easily be mistaken for something that was not even a weapon. A deactivated lightsaber appears as nothing more sinister than a polished metallic handle that is about 15 inches long. At the press of a button this innocuous looking cylinder releases the energy within and transforms into a meter long shaft of devastating energy. An armed lightsaber is a force to be reckoned with and gives off a very distinct sound when cutting through the air.
The Jedi Master
Wielded by the skilled hands of a Jedi, the lightsaber is almost an unstoppable weapon of destruction. The energy it carries is easily capable of cutting through a blast door, armor plating or enemy armor. About the only thing a lightsaber cannot cut through is the blade of another lightsaber. A skilled Jedi can tap into the force and use the lightsaber to deflect blaster bolts and often even deflect them right back at the source.
After Order 66 was enacted, the Jedi ranks were virtually exterminated and the lightsaber became a relic of years gone by. The knowledge of both the use and construction of a lightsaber nearly disappeared from the galaxy forever. Luke Skywalker, the very last of the Jedi line, built his own lightsaber as the culmination of his training.
